Jarell Quansah has been banned for two World Cup matches following his red card in England’s last-16 victory over Mexico on Sunday.
Quansah was dismissed after a VAR review of a sliding challenge on Jesus Gallardo that Fifa have subsequently deemed to be serious foul play, and in accordance of Article 14 of their code of conduct that has led to a two-game ban for the defender.
England had been exploring options surrounding a possible appeal of Quansah’s sending off, especially in light of Fifa’s hugely controversial decision to suspend Folarin Balogun’s one-match ban after the striker had been dismissed in the USA’s win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, in order to have him available for Saturday’s quarter-final against Norway in Miami. Instead the 23-year-old will now not only miss that game but also the semi-final, against either Argentina or Switzerland, should England get that far.
England have something of a crisis at right-back with Reece James an ongoing injury doubt. Ezri Konsa could move from centre-back to that role for the game against Norway.
