‘They should use Mambo No 5 for torture’: Sarah Beeny’s honest playlist
The presenter wakes her family up by blasting out Cal Orff and gets the ick from Chris de Burgh, but which lyrically problematic rap banger is she a secret fan of?

The first song I fell in love with
When I was a teenager, I went to a charity shop in Basingstoke, just happened to buy Jolene by Dolly Parton, then played it non-stop.
The first single I bought
Save a Prayer by Duran Duran, from HMV in Reading. Simon Le Bon was gorgeous, wasn’t he? I liked Morten Harket from A-ha as well.
The song I do at karaoke
Murder on the Dancefloor by Sophie Ellis-Bextor gets everyone dancing. I remember when my kids started playing it, I thought: “This is a blast from the past.” I don’t watch enough films or telly to have realised it had been given a rebirth after featuring in Saltburn.
The song I inexplicably know every lyric to
My husband and four sons are in a band called the Entitled Sons, and I definitely know all the lyrics to Still Smiling, from their album No Clue. I’ve been to gigs all around the country, although I’m sure they find it embarrassing when I sing along.
The best song to play at a party
You literally can’t stay sitting down if someone plays Mambo No 5 (A Little Bit of … ) by Lou Bega. They should use it for torture: tied to a chair, then play Mambo No 5.
The song I can no longer listen to
The Lady in Red by Chris de Burgh was OK when I was a teenager, but these days I find it utterly nauseating.
The song I secretly like, but tell everybody I hate
PIMP by 50 Cent, because it’s catchy and I like the lyrics. But I’m not sure it’s appropriate for me to be singing: “You can’t see / That I’m a motherfuckin’ P-I-M-P / I don’t know what you heard about me,” so I try to keep it to myself.
The song that changed my life
When I was 18 and met my husband, he had When Justice Came by the Black Velvet Band on cassette. That was the moment I thought: “I’ll probably marry him,” because his taste in music was so cool.
The song that gets me up in the morning
I like playing Carmina Burana by Carl Orff on a big speaker to wake everyone up. Everyone should try waking up to that.
The song that makes me cry
Something Stupid by Frank and Nancy Sinatra.
The song I’d like played at my funeral
I’m not going to be there, so I don’t care what they play. But maybe Jump Around by House of Pain would be good.
Help! I Bought It at Auction With Sarah Beeny is on Channel 4, Wednesdays, 8pm.
