Julian Nagelsmann has agreed to step down as Germany’s head coach following the team’s last-32 World Cup exit, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Friday, with Jürgen Klopp set to replace the 38-year-old.

“The German Football Association expressly thanks Julian Nagelsmann for his work since September 2023,” DFB president, Bernd Neuendorf, ‌said in a statement. “He is characterised by a high level of commitment and extraordinary ambition. Julian Nagelsmann is also an extremely responsible and sincere person whom we all value.”

The statement added that the DFB would begin discussions with Klopp over replacing Nagelsmann, with the former Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager, who has been at the World Cup working as a pundit for German TV, “fundamentally willing” to replace Nagelsmann, who has largely failed to impress as Germany head coach. The loss to Paraguay via a penalty shootout in Boston on Monday has proven to be the final straw.

“The decision was anything but easy for me,” Nagelsmann said in a statement. “My top priority has always been the success of the team. After such a bitter disappointment, it deserves the chance of a new beginning. I am sorry and hurt from the bottom of my heart that we disappointed you and couldn’t give you any more football nights at this World Cup.”

German newspaper Bild has reported that Nagelsmann was offered a severance package of €7m, roughly one year’s salary, to cut short his contract, which was set to expire in 2028.

Klopp has been out of management since leaving Liverpool at the end of the 2023-24 Premier League season. He subsequently took on the post of Red Bull’s head of global soccer. Sky Germany has reported that the 59-year-old has a verbal agreement which would allow him to leave to take up the Germany job.
