Milan relinquished their slim hopes of catching Inter at the top of Serie A as they subsided 2-0 at mid-table Sassuolo on Sunday.
Inter can clinch a 21st title should they win or draw against Parma on Sunday night. Should Inter lose, only second-placed Napoli, nine points behind with three rounds of matches left, will have a chance of catching them.
Milan endured a nightmare afternoon in Reggio Emilia. It took just five minutes for Sassuolo to take the lead through Domenico Berardi while Milan played with 10 for most of the match after Fikayo Tomori was sent off in the 24th minute for a second booking.
Armand Laurienté doubled Sassuolo’s lead in the 47th minute. A furious MassimilianoAllegri made a string of changes but Milan failed to get back into the game.
A fourth defeat in their last seven matches means the Rossoneri trail Inter by 12 points. If third-placed Milan’s form does not improve a Champions League spot could be in danger.
“I understand our fans’ frustration; we all want to secure Champions League qualification as soon as possible,” Allegri told broadcaster DAZN. “In these difficult times, we must keep our heads held high. We have three matches left to play, and with two wins, we’ll be in the Champions League.”
Juventus missed the chance to go level on points with Milan as they were held to a 1-1 at home by relegated Verona. Kieron Bowie gave the visitors a shock lead in the first half and although substitute Dusan Vlahovic levelled after the break, Juventus were unable to find a winner.
Inter, meanwhile, will win the title if they avoid defeat at home to Parma in the late kick-off, as a result of Napoli only drawing against Como on Saturday.
Barcelona could also win their league title today, without kicking a ball. Their 2-1 win at Osasuna on Saturday took them 14 points clear of Real Madrid, whose game in hand is at Espanyol, a few miles from the Camp Nou, this evening. If Real fail to win in the home city of their principal rivals then the celebrations can begin.
Celta Vigo strengthened their grip on sixth place thanks to a 3-1 home win against Elche while Getafe slipped to a 2-0 home defeat by Rayo Vallecano.
St Pauli slipped closer to relegation after a 2-1 defeat at home by Mainz in the Bundesliga while second-placed Borussia Dortmund went down 1-0 at Borussia Mönchengladbach.
