My mother stole these plush house slippers from me – here’s why I don’t blame her
Brunch’s bestselling slippers feel like a pair you’d receive at a fancy hotel. I asked my mom how they’ve held up the past few months and how they stack up to other slippers

Eventually, we all turn into our parents.
I never believed this adage until my mom’s love of house slippers rubbed off on me. In my defense, these slippers are no ordinary pair. They’re the New York-based brand Brunch’s bestsellers, designed to feel like the complimentary pair you’d slip on at a luxury hotel.
When I tested a sample this past winter, I was impressed with their plush terry material and partially recycled Eva sole, made of a rubber-like, springy material that felt as if I was walking on a cloud. As a self-proclaimed slob, I rejoiced that these were machine-washable and, according to Brunch, stain-resistant.
But when I brought them to my parents’ house during a visit several months ago, my mom fell in love with them after trying them on. They were so supportive, so luxurious and so cute, she kept telling me.
I watched them swaddle her feet while she stood by her stove, cooking up her famous pasta sauce. I watched them cushion her footsteps as she chased our energetic toy poodle around the house. And I realized that these slippers had a higher purpose: a gift for my mom.
My carry-on bag for my flight back home did not include those slippers.
Whether you’re seeking a belated Mother’s Day present or a spontaneous token of appreciation, Brunch’s slippers will probably delight your mom, too. For the ultimate customer testimonial, I’ve interviewed my own mom about what those slippers have been up to since they landed a near-permanent spot on her feet.

Lauren Gould: I’m starting off with a tough question. What is your philosophy on wearing slippers at home?
Mom: When I’m indoors and cleaning or cooking, I like to have support on my feet so that my knees don’t bother me. I think that when you’re young, you can definitely walk around barefoot. But as you hit 53, it’s not as comfortable. You need more support.
LG: … and how does the rest of our family feel about wearing slippers?
Mom: There’s a very strong opinion about keeping shoes on your feet to support yourself, especially from your grandfather at his age. But he also never wore shoes inside when he was younger.
LG: So, what I’m hearing is that a new pair of comfy slippers is our family’s catnip. When you tried them on, what were your first impressions?
Mom: I felt like they were very cozy and supportive. They felt luxurious.
LG: And how would you say they compare to other slippers that you’ve worn?
Mom: They’re definitely more supportive because they don’t have a flat bottom. They’re more cushiony so they’re meant to do things in, not just wearing to lounge around in.

LG: Since I gifted them to you a few months ago, do you still use them?
Mom: Yep, I wear them for cooking, when I know I’m going to be standing a lot because they’re comfortable. I even recently cooked my lentil detox soup while wearing them. I also put them on for cleaning and after I get out of the shower.
LG: Are they still as white as when you first wore them?
Mom: Yes. I dropped something on them and it wiped off. I cleaned them with a wet rag and dish soap.
LG: What did you drop on them?
Mom: I don’t remember, Lauren. This is way more conversation than I ever anticipated about slippers. This just proves that there’s no such thing as anything being free.
LG: Have you worn them outside of the house?
They don’t look like outside shoes, they look like slippers. They’re really good when you get out of a bath or a shower, and you put them on, but I’m not going to wear them to take the dog outside.
LG: You get hot easily. Are you concerned about sweaty feet if you wear them in the summer?
Mom: They would be fine in the summer with air conditioning.
LG: How are you wearing them around the house?
Mom: Do you want the truth? I wear them with pajama bottoms and a T-shirt. And then on the days that I work remotely and have a work call, I put on a different shirt.

LG: Your love of comfy slippers seems to already be rubbing off on me. What else do I have to look forward to as I get older?
Mom: The joys of liking dogs more than people. And enjoying the simpler things in life. Like the moon – it’s very underappreciated.
LG: Well, thank you for your time, Mom. This was a joy.
Mom: Oh, goodie.
